I have roared and ranted over similar stories before, the only pay back was disappointment at how little was done about it. I suppose I keep coming back to these issues because I remain hardened to my belief that no matter how old you are, these behaviors are not born in a person.
I cannot debate any reason this young woman may or may not have had for doing this, however I will say, whatever reason she believed, was not good enough.
Our local society is dealing with more and more delinquents every day, alarmingly though we as adults, parents, guardians and caregivers are hard pressed legally in being allowed to resolve the problem.
Our Child Youth and Family Services say: If your child comes home, and destroys your house, you cannot stop them or restrain them. Simply call the police, and have your child charged. Well what kind of can of worms are we opening at that point?
Let's consider maternal instinct for one! I am betting no matter how harsh the crime, mothers will stick by their kids. Our system has failed families period, and that's the real and only problem.
This case resolution is lost in the translation, had mother been allowed to defend herself and beat that kid into next week, took the computers, phones and smokes away for a month, what different child she would have.
Children make choices, I believe they should have to live by their choices. If I as an adult did the same crime, I do not pass go, I do not collect 200 dollars, I go straight to jail! The difference between me and a 14 year old is? Nothing! the difference is with the province not being set up to deal with young offenders. That's it, in a nut shell.
When will it stop? When parents are given full dominion over their children without fear of penalty.
