Another Smoke Screen

Dr. Mazen Bader - the province's only infectious disease specialist - has resigned. Bader gave his notice with Eastern Health in December and as expected would leave the province in March for another job.

Bader is a full-time specialist treating people with hepatitis, meningitis, serious infection and anyone with a compromised immune system resulting from surgery, bone marrow transplants or HIV/AIDS. Bader runs the province's only HIV/AIDS clinic, which may have to close if Eastern Health can't find another infectious disease specialist by March.

Well that gives us about three weeks to find another doctor. Excuse me for suggesting to Eastern Health, but you folk have once again fell asleep at the wheel. Sure you say you have been looking for a year, but the focus needed to be on retention, not replacement, no matter at what peril.

This situation is grave, we are not talking about losing one doctor from a pool of a same specialty*, we are talking about losing the only doctor the province has for this specialty. This is very scary indeed.

Eastern Health and the Department of Health and Community Services is failing Newfoundland and Labrador, and resolve must happen soon!
